Cutting the knotweed
JAPANESE knotweed was introduced to Ireland in the 19th century, and since then it has run rampant, causing structural damage to houses and blocking drains, thanks to its strong roots and rapid growth. Now it has colonised land in Rosslare Harbour owned by CIE and Wexford County Council, threatening the value of nearby homes. Both bodies say they plan to eradicate it, but a national strategy to get rid of this scourge is clearly needed.
