ALSO PLAYING
Teresa Deevy is also the inspiration for what could be the most unusual production of the Fringe Festival. Talk Real Fine Just Like a Lady, by Amanda Coogan, in conjunction with Theatre for The Deaf, opens in The Peacock on Sept 19. According to Coogan, Deevy’s play The King of Spain’s Daughter is the launch pad for the new work. It’s not a straightforward version of the original, hence the change of title. There is no dialogue as such; the cast will be using sign language, accompanied by a soundtrack. The only section of the original
play referred to is the Padraic Colum poem, The Drover, that contains the lines: ‘My thoughts on white
ships, And the King o’ Spain’s daughter.’ The main character is not unlike Katie Roche. The actual staging of the play is quite distinctive. ‘When you enter the auditorium, you will be in the middle of the installation, which is Mrs Mark’s skirt, completely covering the auditorium. You will have to bend down and crawl into your seats, popping your head through a hole in her skirt to view the visually stunning immersive performance. Members of the deaf community greet everyone outside the auditorium, and guide you to your seat by the hand!’
