Anthem overdose

-

A couple of years ago former Armagh footballer Jarlath Burns caused a bit of controversy when he suggested that the GAA could do with fewer flags and anthems.

Now many support such views, with criticism in the news lately of flags and too many renditions of Amhrán na bhFiann.

Our national anthem is not played or sung as much at venues of other sports, but it does appear that the GAA people feel that they are more Irish than the rest. There have even been instances of officials changing their names to the Irish versions after assuming high positions.

It can be uplifting to hear our anthem at major finals and international events, and the county equivalents add to the occasion on the big days at Croke Park in September.

But there is hardly any need for the constant playing of Amhrán na bhFiann before the throw-in for less important fixtures.

The obsession with the patriotic tune needs to be curbed. Bill McMahon, Navan, Co. Meath.
