Mercy flights save hundreds of animals

-

HUNDREDS of animals have been saved from the hurricane.

In one dramatic airlift, 60 dogs and 92 cats were flown 3,000 miles from a Miami rescue shelter to San Francisco. Elena Bicker, of the Tony La Russa Animal Rescue Foundation, said: ‘We needed to protect our animals and free up space so when the hurricane passes we can take in displaced pets. The mercy flight means those animals are safe and will find homes on the west coast.’

Officials in Cuba airlifted six male dolphins from a water park on Friday, and volunteers in Key West yesterday wrapped up scores of wild chickens in newspapers to take them to the safety of a hotel. ‘They were easy to catch, as if they sensed we were trying to help,’ said an islander.
