Irish honeymooners stuck as storm looms

- By Kevin Duggan

A PAIR of Irish honeymooners have found themselves stranded with restricted access to food and water in Florida as Hurricane Irma barrels down on the Sunshine State.

Alison Desmond and her husband Leigh, who are both from Youghal, Co Cork, arrived in Miami on Monday to warnings of bad weather around the corner.

They were originally meant to leave on an MSC cruise, but found out it had been cancelled on Wednesday. With Miami being evacuated, they managed to get to Tampa – but their hotel only serves breakfast and local supermarkets are running out of food and water. They are due to fly home today, but it is unlikely that their flight will go ahead.

Ms Desmond explained: ‘Since we landed in Miami on Monday night, this whole experience has been the most stressful and frightening thing we could ever imagine and every day the uncertainty makes it even worse.

‘We aren’t bothered about the fact our honeymoon is ruined anymore, we just want to be home and safe.’
