Love for Diana is real, not a ‘mania’ or an ‘obsession’

-

Having read the letter by Maurice Fitzgerald about Princess Diana (MoS letters, September 3), I should like to point out a few facts that he may not be aware of.

I totally agree with him that the dead should be allowed to rest in peace. However, when he describes the deep love and respect that the world had for Diana as ‘obsession and mania’, in no way did he know anything about this lady.

She was originally Lady Diana, and that is what she truly was. He described her as a ‘celebrity’. I would not insult Princess Diana by referring to her as a celebrity.

The term is a pejorative, suggesting that the individual has no particular talents or abilities.

No, Mr Fitzgerald. Princess Diana was not a celebrity. She was a woman who was unfortunate enough to meet and marry Prince Charles, who happened to be in love with another woman.

She did her duty, and did not experience real love until her two lovely sons were born.

If you look at any of the photos of Diana with her two sons, you will see what real love is, and why we ‘fanatics’ adored her.

Thank God, her memory will always be kept alive through those lovely young men who, because of her, now enjoy life outside the palace walls, and know what ‘the common touch’ really is.

Rest in Heaven, beautiful Diana. Esther Maher O’Keeffe, Naas, Co. Kildare.
