U2, Damien Rice and even the President are keeping shtum

-

IrIsh luminaries who greeted Aung san suu Kyi during her visit to Ireland avoided answering questions about her this weekend.

The Irish Mail on sunday asked President Michael D. higgins and a number of artists who previously celebrated Ms suu Kyi if she should lose the Freedom of Dublin.

A spokesman for President higgins said his views ‘would be the same as those of the UN high Commissioner for human rights, namely that respect for the human rights of the rohingya people is and should be a matter of global concern’.

When it was pointed out that he had not answered the question, he said: ‘I know, and I have nothing further to add’.

U2’s song Walk On and Damien rice’s Unplayed Piano were inspired by her but spokespeople for U2 did not return requests for comments, while a spokesman for rice said he was out of the country.

A spokeswoman for expresident and ex-UN boss Mary robinson said she was dealing with the query, but didn’t deliver a response. Actress saoirse ronan, who read a poem at the gig, didn’t respond while singer Declan O’rourke, who played at it, said: ‘I have no comment to make on that, I don’t know enough about it.’
