The FAI is in quite a fix
BRAY WANDERERS head coach Harry Kenny has been a part of the League of Ireland’s fabric stretching back 40 years to his days as a full back with Shamrock Rovers. He was fortunate to savour the best of domestic football with the Hoops’ all-conquering side of the 1980s, but this week he has endured the very worst.
The fraud squad of an Garda Síochána began an investigation into suspected match-fixing of the club’s recent 5-0 defeat to First Division leaders Waterford, with four other games also under suspicion. Fresh on the back of two Athlone Town players being found guilty of the same offence and banned for 12 months, this latest scandal is a disaster for a league which fights a continuous battle for credibility and respect within a rich Irish sporting landscape.
The FAI now has a major job on its hands to restore trust, but only strong and willing leadership will suffice.
