WHAT’S ON

-

Cathy Jordan of Dervish, Jarlath Henderson of Four Men And A Dog along with Mick Daly, the youngest winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, have formed a bit of a folk supergroup. They are out around the country hawking their very agreeable wares in the next days and weeks. Catch them tonight in the Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. At a completely different pace, one of the best live bands in the world, Red Hot Chili Peppers, come to the capital this week. They are in the 3 Arena on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday is Culture Night, one of the best innovations in the Irish arts scene in recent years. Venues all over the country throw open the doors for all manner of events from the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in the Dublin’s National Concert Hall to the wonderful Julie Feeney at the Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laoghaire and trad sessions in some of Cork’s best public houses.

There is a huge open-air concert at Dublin Castle with Cavan’s finest The Strypes, and Áine Cahill and Dáithí and a host of others.

There is so much going on that it is highly recommended you check out culturenight.ie for details of what is going on in your area.

Mary Coughlan is still a potent live performer. She is back in her home city for a gig. Get along to the Town Hall Theatre, Galway, at 8pm on Friday for one of our true musical greats.

Expect nothing bad or ugly in the 3 Arena on Saturday night, just good, great and genius from Ennio Morricone, the composer who scored many classic films, including of course The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. If you can get a ticket, in Clint’s name go!

The hugely talented Henry Girls are in Theatre Royal in Waterford on Saturday night. The Donegal sisters (they’re actually McLaughlins) are one of the finest folk outfits plying their trade now; highly recommended if you are down around the Deise.
