Maia: Being a mum can be really lonely

- By Jake Hurfurt

FAMILY rather than work was the reason behind Maia Dunphy’s move to England with her husband Johnny Vegas, she tells the Irish Mail on Sunday this week.

Now living in Richmond, a leafy London suburb, Maia said she wanted ‘to spend time with my husband and stepson and to have a baby’.

Her son Tom is now two years old, and Maia has been open about the struggles of motherhood, especially when living away from home.

Motherhood was ‘lonely’ for the 41-year-old, especially with husband Johnny being a touring comedian.

She said: ‘I was literally alone as well as being metaphorically alone because I was living in London, my husband was away and I had only moved there and didn’t have my tribe with me.’

Maia is coming back to Irish television screens soon with a new show on TV3 called Heartbreak Hotel.

It marks a change for the broadcaster, who has long been associated with RTÉ.

Maia told the MoS: ‘I find it very odd that people think that I am leaving RTÉ or jumping ship. There is no jumping ship.

‘You are a freelancer so I would hope to be working for RTÉ in the future.’

to a production error Maia’s son Tom was wrongly identified as the toddler pictured with Maia in this week’s MoS Magazine.
