Muireann lifts lid on highwire act at Six O’Clock

- By Craig Hughes

ACCIDENTALLY walking in front of rolling cameras, guests dancing on tables and worrying that there will be no guests at all are just some of the things that TV3’s new Six O’Clock Show host has had to get used to.

Muireann O’Connell recently took over the reins from Lucy Kennedy as a co-host of the Six O’Clock Show and the Limerick native – who formally hosted the show on Fridays – is getting to grips with the frantic pace and unpredictability of daily live television.

The multi-talented O’Connell – who also hosts the Saturday Hits show on Today FM – loves the daily turnover of guests and getting to meet new people with new stories.

‘You never quite know what’s going to happen.

‘There might be anything, from tears coming down someone’s face during an emotional interview to someone doing a jig on the table.

‘I love what I’m doing, I just hope people don’t get sick of me,’ she said.

But guests love coming on the show too, so much so that they are willing to run through traffic to get there. Muireann explained: ‘One day, there was crazy traffic and there were no guests in studio seven minutes before we went on air. The Happy Pear boys were due to be the chefs on the show. One of the lads, Dave Flynn, jumped out of the car and ran the last kilometre to get here on time. ‘Everyone was so calm, I couldn’t believe it. In the end, it all worked out – but it was a first for me. I’m used to everyone being there an hour before.’ When asked about her love life, O’Connell was tight-lipped. She said: ‘I am dating. I just don’t want to freak them out (by naming them in a national newspaper).’
