Caulfield admits scoring is Cork’s Achilles heel for title run-in

- By Philip Quinn

JOHN CAULFIELD bemoaned the ‘comical goals’ Cork City coughed up to Limerick in Friday night’s 2-1 defeat but when it comes to the absence of goals in his team since Sean Maguire’s departure to Preston, it’s no laughing matter.

In their seven league games post-Maguire, City have scored just six goals. Worse, they’ve lost four times, including two on the bounce.

The latest slip in a Munster derby at the Markets Field was all about the striker who wasn’t playing, rather than those who were, as City lacked a cutting edge in the opposition box.

‘We couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net and that has been a bit of an Achilles heel for us in the past few weeks,’ acknowledged the Cork City manager.

It didn’t help that City, playing for the first time in 13 days, started in first gear and found themselves two down inside eight minutes to ‘soft goals, kamikaze stuff,’ according to Caulfield.

With Dundalk rolling over Drogheda at Oriel Park, the gap has been cut to 11 points, and the goal difference is now level, +45 apiece, with just five games remaining.
