P-p-p-pack your bags for a trip to Patagonia

On a journey to the ends of the Earth, Ben Haugh takes a unique cruise around the icy scapes of Patagonia, where the glaciers are the real stars

THE ice-cold rain belts down and the wind hisses with bitter rage as we wait to board the dinghies. I’m standing on the deck of an enormous cruise ship just 1,000km from the South Pole surrounded by worried looking faces from all over the world.

Most of us have travelled to this remote part of Chile to visit Cape Horn Island but we have been warned that the journey could be called off at any moment.

After three days at sea this is the final leg of our voyage and we are at the mercy of the elements.

From our position on the ship, it is easy to see why explorers once thought the world ended here and feared sailing off its edge.

After an eternal wait the captain finally gives us the signal and we begin our journey through the tossing, foaming waters to the historic island before us.
