High kicks and jazz hands at the Bord Gáis
Crazy For You (Bord Gáis Theatre, ★★★★), is a touring, reconditioned and re-written musical from 1930, performed by actors who double on-stage as musicians.
And it has George and Ira Gershwin songs that are still toe-tapping marvels including Someone To Watch
Over Me and I Got Rhythm. It’s a streamlined classic musical comedy that plugs the idea of revitalising a Western hick town by restoring its dilapidated theatre and deadbeat locals.
In best music-comedy style, stagecrazy Bobby from New York disguises himself as top east-coast producer Bela Zangler, wins the heart of the local beauty and comes out on top.
In a snappy production, Tom Chambers as Bobby had to sing, dance and perform high-risk activities. The physical comedy was an integral part of the presentation, especially in the cleverly choreographed scene where Bobby, disguised as Bela Zangler, met the man himself.
Caroline Flack and Charlotte Wakefield took the main female roles in a show that left a lot of tuneless modern musicals for dead.
It finished its run here yesterday.
