Why do they keep giving it away?

LIVERPOOL are scoring plenty of goals, but they just can’t stop them flying in at the other end. Here are some of their worst defensive shockers so far this season...

-

1. Watford 3 Liverpool 3 In the third minute of injury time, Watford’s Jose Holebas’s corner fell short in the Liverpool area, but Georginio Wijnaldum missed the ball and it fell into the path of Nordin Amrabat, who scooped it goalwards for Miguel Britos, apparently well offside, to bundle home.

Jurgen Klopp said: ‘We know we can do better. We have to do better.’ Jamie Carragher said on Sky: ‘On set-pieces, it’s not just about the defence. It’s about the whole team!’ 2. Liverpool 2 Sevilla 2 Liverpool endured a nightmare start when Wissam Ben Yedder capitalised on an error from Dejan Lovren to fire the visitors in front. Lovren made an absolute mess of a Sergio Escudero cross from the left. It got worse as Roberto Firmino missed a penalty.

Rio Ferdinand, speaking on BT Sport, said: ‘Lovren should clear his lines. Why he has fallen over there to clear the ball I will never know.’ RED RAGE: Klopp despairs at the defending 3. Liverpool 1 Burnley 1 Sean Dyche’s side took the lead through Scott Arfield with their first shot on target. Hesitation by centre-backs Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan allowed the ball to drop between them in the middle of the penalty area. Klopp said: ‘It’s our fault. We were dominant, fantastic attitude. We played good, were fluent with seven changes, but only one goal. We have to take the point and carry on.’ 4. S Moscow 1 Liverpool 1 Emre Can takes far too long to release possession and sends a loose pass down the flank. Coutinho, tracking back from midfield, attempts to win the ball and concedes a free-kick for a trip on Samedov 25 yards from goal. Fernando’s free-kick appeared a stunner for Spartak, but it was central and keeper Loris Karius should have done much more. Jordan Henderson said: ‘We controlled the game so we should win comfortably. We’ve got to make sure we don’t give goals away. In a worse-case scenario we should win 1-0. We’ve got to finish teams off and be more ruthless.’
