Getting a little older brings some welcome changes, such as wisdom and, hopefully, patience. Many of us, though, don’t see or hear as well as we used to. With this in mind I was anxious to try a pair of headphones that promise an unusual listening experience – one that’s customised for everyone who wears them.

The Even H2 headphones are the first I’ve tried that ‘EarPrint’ the listener. The idea is that, as our hearing changes over time, we can adjust and customise the headphones for our own ears. Essentially, the Even H2s come with a built-in hearing test.

Stylish and premium-looking, the pads that cover your ears are backed with walnut. There’s also metal and PU leather, so they’re durable and look good. Also in the box is a USB cable for charging, an owner’s guide, a hard-shell carry case and a cable for the wired mode.

My headphones were charged when they arrived but charging is quick and a full charge will give you 20 hours of continuous listening. I downloaded the free companion app, Even EarPrint, from the iOS app store and powered up the headphones. There are buttons for play, pause and volume, and a built-in microphone, so you can take/make calls.

Instantly, Sarah introduced herself. She’s like a breezier version of Siri and she talked me through creating my EarPrint. It’s much the same as a hearing test. First the right ear, then the left, I pressed a button on the headphones as soon as I heard music. At the end of the short test, I checked the app. There’s a clear, easy to understand graphic display, showing how well I hear in each ear. I connected the headphones via Bluetooth to my iPhone and tried a variety of music. It sounded good. After that, I plugged them into my phone, which sounded better. Then, I opened the Even app and enabled my EarPrint. The sound was tranformed – it felt warmer, richer, almost cosy.

From jazz, to pop to classical, the Even H2, with the EarPrint enabled, sounded wonderful. I did try some audio books and radio and that was where I found them wanting a little in that the sound felt a little theatre like.

Overall, they perform well as standard, mid-range headphones but the EarPrint feature is special. You can create prints for different family members and Even advises that you test your own ears twice a year. I recommending using the EarPrint feature – that way, you’ll be immersed in music made for your ears, which you only have to share with Sarah.
