After 22 years, Niamh says goodbye to Carrigstown

- By Eoin Reynolds

FIERY redhead Niamh Brennan is leaving Carrigstown.

Niamh, played by actress Clelia Murphy, has been among Fair City’s most entertaining and memorable characters since she joined in 1995.

But, after 22 years, she has already filmed her farewell scene which we are told holds a ‘surprise twist’ for love rat and on-off lover Paul Brennan, played by Tony Tormey.

While fans of the RTÉ show might be sad to see Clelia go, the Fair City scriptwriters have revealed that she is quitting only for the ‘foreseeable future’, insisting she can return at any time to ‘ruffle feathers like only she can’.

So many storylines down through the years have helped to make Niamh Brennan one of the greatest soap characters of our time. The sassy redhead will be remembered for her vengeful masterplan to embezzle Paul’s money after she discovered he was cheating on her with Hayley.

Her spat with Jane Black back in 2014, when she split Jane from Paul, is another classic moment in the folklore of Carrigstown. Also, who could forget when she aborted Leo Dowling’s baby or all those schoolgirl shenanigans with Barry? And then there was the love triangle with Paul and Nicola.

Her popularity was even more evident earlier this year when Fair City ran its first ever two-hander episode with Niamh and Paul. It was a massive ratings hit and almost 450,000 people tuned in to see the fiery couple launch into a blazing row over the lies and cheating that had gone on for months.
