McVerry puts our ministers to shame

I was not surprised to hear that Fr Peter McVerry and his trust have joined forces with the Pathways to Housing organisation, which is helping to solve the American homeless situation.

How Fr Peter has kept his patience in dealing with countless Irish housing ministers throughout the years, I do not know. Fr Peter’s family were comfortable, as the saying goes, and he could be settled in a cosy parish now doing what most of our priests do (and we are grateful that we still have men doing it).

He is a man of true compassion. As every member of our Government receives their hefty pay rise, think of those not too far from Leinster House who sit in a cold doorway tonight, on a cardboard box.
