Revved up like a deuce

(1978)

‘It’s a happenstance shot,’ says photographer Frank Stefanko. ‘We were coming out of my house in Haddonfield, New Jersey. He’d driven down in his 1960 Corvette, his pride and joy. I said, “Why don’t you lean on the hood?” and snapped off a single frame. It became my most famous shot, because it’s the song,

Thunder Road, in graphic form: From your front porch to my front seat/The door is open but the ride it ain’t free. He’s waiting for the girl to come into his car and ride away. To escape.’
