awful consequence of our worst sporting week in living memory is that our three great stadia, Croke Park, Aviva and Paírc Uí Chaoimh, will not get the world exposure they deserve.

After being hammered by the Danes on Tuesday, there will be no competitive international soccer games for Ireland, bar the hardly illustrious UEFA Nations League, until 2019 – while the IRFU is rightly reeling from our failed World Cup bid.

That Scotland and Wales let us down is a reminder of how they refused to travel here at the height of the Troubles, while England always turned up.

The Aussie Rules test matches have been a damp squib, with many calls for them to be abandoned. Looks like the highlights in Croker and the Aviva in the next 12 months will be Michael Bublé and Taylor Swift, pictured.
