Who’s truly Irish?
It seems that being born in the country can sometimes be a disadvantage when it comes to being selected for Irish rugby and soccer teams. Simon Zebo, a home-bred rugby player from Cork, had his services dispensed with because of his decision to move from Munster to a club in France.
But as Simon stepped out, in stepped Bundee Aki, a New Zealander who qualifies to wear the green as a result of a rule that permits him to change countries after living in Connacht for a matter of weeks.
It has been the same story as regards our soccer team since the parents/grandparents rule came into force, with honorary Irishmen getting preference over natives in many instances.
Such trends have caused many supporters to become less enthusiastic about following our national teams.
