Dundon’s Christmas dinner for lifeguards

- By Jim Gallagher

CELEBRITY chef Kevin Dundon has told of his admiration for the RNLI after cooking a special Christmas dinner for 25 volunteer lifeguards last week.

Describing the rescue workers in Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford as ‘my heroes’, the TV cook served up turkey, ham and all the trimmings as a ‘thank you’ for their bravery.

‘These guys are all volunteers,’ he said. ‘They go out in these stormy conditions and they fight for the fishermen’s lives. I just think they are real heroes.

‘They walk around 365 days a year with their pagers on, even on Christmas Day. Hopefully, they won’t get called out that day but of course they could.’

Dundon, who is a brand ambassador for SuperValu, was invited by the supermarket chain to come up with a Christmas idea for a local community.

‘The first people who came to mind were the RNLI,’ said the father of three who set up a kitchen in the boathouse in Kilmore Quay. ‘They couldn’t get over it. They were genuinely so appreciative. We were there from early morning and then served lunch at 2.30.’
