Goal-of-the-season contenders flying in
NEVER mind goal of the season, good luck picking out goal of the week.
The standard of goals in the Premier League during the midweek matches was incredible.
When the first went in from Jamie Vardy (pictured) against Spurs, I immediately said ‘goal of the season’. But then, in the same game, he was run close by his teammate Riyad Mahrez, not to mention Harry Kane’s consolation. Wayne Rooney beat the lot with his wonderful goal from the halfway line against West Ham. To hit a moving ball so hard and accurately from that distance was outstanding. Arsenal also got three really good team goals, with lovely finishes from Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez and you won’t see many better-struck volleys than Mo Salah’s against Stoke for Liverpool.
Ashley Young scored an excellent free-kick for Manchester United, which even seemed to surprise Jose Mourinho, and Jesse Lingaard scored a superb individual goal in that game, too.
Then there was a rare right-footed strike for Robbie Brady, which was a brilliant hit from the edge of the area, and an even better goal from Raheem Sterling to snatch a late win for Manchester City against Southampton. The way he opened his body up and beat Fraser Forster with so little space was outstanding.
Long may it continue. It will certainly be tough selecting the goal of the season at this rate.
For now, it is Rooney. Or was it Vardy? Or Sterling?
