We must support gardaí who risk their lives for us

-

THE wounding of a brave garda this week, as he did his duty protecting the public, is a timely reminder of the risks taken by the members of our police force.

I have spoken out against malpractice and unfair treatment of whistleblowers within the force, but I believe we need to support the gardaí who work tirelessly to make this country a safer place.

The festive season will see an upsurge in the activities of the gangs that have ripped communities apart with their predatory drug dealing and other crimes.

While we depend on the gardaí to hold the line against these lowlifes, we mustn’t forget they need our support to win through.

Anyone who witnesses a drug deal, or who has information about the pushers or their bosses, has a moral obligation to share it with the gardaí. Even a seemingly insignificant detail may provide the missing piece of a complex jigsaw that could help put another predator behind bars.

Anyone who wishes to enhance the quality of life in Ireland should put aside any reservations about ‘informing’ and shop the dealers. In doing so, you’ll be giving the greatest gift of all this Christmas. You’ll be helping our country to become a safer place.

John Fitzgerald, Callan, Co. Kilkenny.
