Antonio leaves Moyes in a mood

- By Matt Barlow

DAVID MOYES issued a critical reminder of the standards he expects after West Ham’s mini-revival crashed to a halt against Newcastle — and Michail Antonio was in his line of fire.

Antonio was replaced by Andy Carroll with less than an hour played and the Hammers trailing 2-1.

Moyes said: ‘We said at half-time we’d have to do something about it, but he never gave us anything we could see would be helping us.’

Antonio was a key man last season but has struggled to make an impact in a campaign hit by injuries.

‘It was a totally error-strewn game,’ added Moyes, who was frustrated that the Hammers did not build on Marko Arnautovic’s opener.

‘The first goal was always going to be important and we should have capitalised. We made big mistakes for their first and there’s an offside for the second, which the linesman should give. But defensively we were poor. We never dealt with balls up to the strikers or cut across goal, which we have been doing.’

Andre Ayew’s penalty miss also upset Moyes, who noted Manuel Lanzini’s miss at Everton last month, before he added: ‘It’s hard enough to get the chances. We can’t be missing them. We need to do better.’
