‘Naughty’ list

-

In voting with the anti-USA bloc during the UN Resolution on the status of Jerusalem, earlier this month, Ireland surely placed itself on America’s ‘naughty list’ in time for Christmas. After such an ill-considered stance by Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs, the United States will not be so quick to forgive and forget that act of treachery by the Irish delegation, during the UN General Assembly vote.

When it comes time for Leo Varadkar to march up to the gates of the White House next St Patrick’s Day, one could hardly fault some US officials thinking that our politicians do have a ‘hard neck’ to turn against them in the UN, and then expect to play the Irish card just weeks later.

It’s not as if Ireland had to vote on the motion. After all, Poland and Australia abstained. Ireland does consider itself a neutral nation, under the Constitution, right? That great friend of Ireland must surely be dismayed at the treatment given to them at the UN by Ireland. We can only hope that this turkey does not come home to roost. Tom Baldwin, Midleton, Co. Cork.
