Parties all alike

-

The new year begins with the political guff and disturbing revelations from 2017 still ringing in our ears. Just before Christmas we heard Leo Varadkar saying it was vital we latch onto another silly ‘security’ EU organisation in Pesco, even though it makes a nonsense of our neutrality laws. (Pesco is a military framework)

During the year we were also reminded that those who joined Sinn Féin in good faith found – when in elected office – were sometimes allegedly threatened not to hold opinions that departed from the SF diktat. Many in this country could have told new recruits that the Sinn Féin leopard would not change its spots.

Then we have Fianna Fáil, the main opposition party which also serves as the main Government cheerleader on matters where action is needed on their side of the House. The Labour Party, or what exists of it, is again making noises that it alone is the defender of the poor, forgetting that its members ignored the poor when in government.

Where do Irish citizens stand in all this? In the life of quasinational governments and EU decrees, we simply do not matter. We are merely taxable units.

It’s the economy, stupid – people do not count. Robert Sullivan, Bantry, Co. Cork.
