The TRESS* SET

So did they get dressed in the dark? Or have these red carpet queens fallen victim to the most ludicrous fashion trend of them all?

- by Liz Jones

WE’VE seen some daft fashion trends in the past – mullet hems, pelmets, playsuits, pyjamas as outerwear – but the tress, an elongated, evening take on the skort (half skirt, half shorts) is the most ridiculous of them all.

Exactly what, I wonder, goes through these women’s gloriously empty heads as they prepare for a red-carpet event? Were they trapped in the land of indecision: dress or trousers, trousers or dress?

Did they spend so many hours getting eyelash extensions that they only had time for one leg to be strip-waxed? They broke one leg skiing, so they are covering up the plaster cast? The couturier ran out of fabric?

A friend has just kindly pointed out that ‘young people like the one-legged look’: her daughter, 20 today, has a Topshop version.

Apparently, one-legged jeans are also a trend, an extreme version of the early 1980s mania for sporting huge ripped holes at the knee.

What next for the women who don’t do anything by halves? One stiletto, one ballet pump? An eye patch?
