Liberal double standards
REGARDING your article on the lifting on the ban on pubs opening on Good Friday (MoS, January 28), it’s notable how consistently inconsistent the liberal agenda now is.
On one hand, we have had a succession of health ministers moving to crack down on unhealthy habits, starting with the smoking ban and moving on to more recent ideas such as minimum pricing for alcohol.
We hear constantly about the grave health risks posed by smoking and by excessive drinking, and our politicians don’t hesitate to impose stringent regulations.
Yet here they are, lifting a small ban on alcohol sales. Why the blatant contradiction?
Because Good Friday is a holy day and if there’s one thing liberals oppose even more passionately than smoking and drinking, it’s the Catholic Church. Margaret McKenna, Bantry, Co. Cork.
