BROTHERS GRIM...

-

Séamus O’Rourke has the same feeling as John B Keane had for rural Ireland. He showed it clearly in Sand Park and Pádraig Potts’ Guide To Walking, and he’s done it again in his thoughtful, entertaining two-hander, From Under The Bed that’s having its premiere run in The Viking in Clontarf. Two elderly bachelor farmer brothers, Pat (Arthur Riordan) and Eugene (Séamus O’Rourke), argue with each other against a background of Pope John Paul’s Irish visit in 1979. They both have the same almost pathological outlook on money – something to be hoarded, not spent. They unearth their sadly unsuccessful humorous ventures into romance, their problems with a blocked chimney, sanitary arrangements, and social issues. The poignant undercurrent is salted by some earthy humour, beautifully handled by the performers. Runs until February 10.
