FIVE TOP TIPS FOR TOKYO
1 AVOID THE PEAK SEASON
Cherry blossom and autumn foliage times (usually early April and mid-November respectively) are peak season for Japanese travellers, so hotel rates are high. Other times to avoid include Golden Week and Obon (April 29 to May 5, and mid-August respectively).
2 FLY – IT’S CHEAPER THAN THE TRAIN
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways each offer special fares and air passes for exclusive use by foreign visitors to Japan, which enable holders to fly anywhere within the country for about €80 per flight. It’s often cheaper and faster than the Bullet Train.
3 STEER CLEAR OF THE TAXIS
A cab from Narita airport into central Tokyo will cost more than €170: take the train or bus instead.
4 TAKE THE SUBWAY
At first glance, public transport in big cities may look indecipherable. But signs are also in English and everybody is very helpful – it’s worth persevering because prices are very cheap.
5 HIRE A GUIDE
In most major cities you can find volunteer guides offering free tours, often to practise their English. For more information, visit tokyofreeguide.org.
