TOP-NOTCH SCORE SHOWS MATT NOT ONLY SHARP BUT ‘FLYING IT’

-

AT 82, Matt Murphy says he ‘isn’t looking to join the Army’.

While he isn’t as agile as he used to be, in the past two months he has been put through his paces by the HSE.

After an ongoing series of assessments, he failed to receive his certificate of mental capacity – despite passing each successive test.

This week, under the advice of a new solicitor, he obtained independent medical assessment to finally prove he is of sound mind and perfectly capable of asserting his own financial affairs.

Sitting opposite Dr Andrew Jordan, chairman of the National Association of General Practitioners in his Aylesbury Clinic in Tallaght, he once more sought to put the matter to rest. His husband Michael O’Sullivan sat in the waiting area while he was assessed for nearly an hour.

Scoring 29 points out of 30 in the mini-mental state

examination, he stunned Dr Jordan with his level of mental agility. Speaking to the Irish Mail on Sunday, with Mr Murphy’s permission, Dr Jordan said ‘it’s a very high score’. ‘He’s perfect. He’s flying it.’ Dr Jordan was particularly impressed with Mr Murphy’s ability to spell words backwards.

‘He performed superbly. I have no doubt he has full capacity,’ said Dr Jordan, who will sign a declaration from Mr Murphy’s solicitor, attesting to this.

The only trouble Mr Murphy had with the assessment was a momentary difficulty in recalling the month as, according to his husband, he was a bit flustered.
