Class warfare as children f lip lids over talking pencil cases

- By Jonathan Petre

A SCHOOL pencil case used to be a simple zip-up pouch where you kept your... pencils.

But for today’s children it is an expensive fashion accessory that’s causing so much conflict that some schools are banning it. The alarm follows a surge in interest among youngsters in stationery, part of a burgeoning market worth billions.

One popular pencil case lights up and can record messages. Another is modelled on Star Wars android R2-D2, complete with sound effects. But now teachers at some schools in Britain have asked that the distracting items be left at home.

‘We have been spending time in classes trying to fix friendship fallouts that result from managing cases and their contents,’ said one school.
