Man found dead in Sligo town flat had been ‘attacked with an iron bar’

- By Gerry McLaughlin

GARDAÍ have launched a murder inquiry after the body of a young man was found in a flat in Sligo town yesterday afternoon.

It is understood he was attacked with an ‘iron bar’ and suffered fatal injuries in a violent incident.

His injuries have been described by sources as showing the attack to have been ‘particularly violent’.

A man in his thirties has been arrested and has been taken to Ballymote Garda Station.

Gardaí sealed off the area around the flat on Connolly Street in the town and an ambulance was called.

The man had been living there with a number of other people.

The scene will be preserved overnight pending the arrival of the State pathologist.

A post-mortem is then expected to be carried out at Sligo University Hospital.

News of the discovery came as a terrible shock to local people.

One local man told RTÉ News that there had been another killing nearby about two years ago and that he was shocked that there could be two killings in the same area in that relatively short space of time.

Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the area while a forensic examination is being carried out.
