How to get best deals your electricity and on gas

The Golden Rule is: if you’ve been with the same supplier for more than a year, it’s time to switch to make savings

-

The Golden Rule with energy costs is the same as with everything else: if you’re with the same supplier for over a year you’re probably paying too much. The average user can save around €372 on their energy costs by switching. That figure changes constantly as firms jostle for market share with new deals coming out all the time.

It’s not just the savings for switching once in a lifetime. That’s what you can save if you switch every year or 18 months (depending on your contract) because that’s the way the industry works.

The best deals expire after a few months leaving you forking out over the odds after that unless you switch.

But by keeping on top of it and using comparison sites you can easily avoid the pain and keep getting those discounts, year after year.

Just make a note in your diary – if it’s on your computer set it to send an alert.

Surprisingly, it’s cheaper to get your gas and electricity separately rather than from the same supplier under a dual fuel deal.

Also watch out for early exit fees of around €100 that apply on most energy contracts nowadays – €50 each on gas and electricity. So how do you switch? Switcher.ie or Bonkers.ie will find the best energy deal for you. Just follow these simple steps to compare gas and electricity.

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) say only around 15% of Irish consumers switch energy each year.

Below is a table of the cheapest gas and electricity tariffs available based on the national average consumption.

This table will give you some indication as to who has the cheapest standard tariffs, but you won’t know which is best for you, and how much you’ll pay, without punching in your own usage.

Switching your supplier to get separate gas and electricity deals can also save you more than dual fuel packages – and most energy suppliers also provide discounts for new customers.
