Time to cash in as airlines cut prices

Five of the best offers out there

- By Dave Kenny

No-frills flights from Ireland don’t just go to sunny Malaga and Palma – there are plenty of places in Europe and further afield that are well worth exploring…

1 WINTER WARMER WITH MORE THAN JUST SAND…

MIAMI, FLORIDA: It may be famous for its beaches, but there is life beyond the sands. Miami boasts a café culture to rival any European city. Little Havana, Miami’s Cuban quarter, is home to some of the best.

Then there are the museums, manor houses and wildlife parks.

After sundown, choose between the city’s Spanish-style, al fresco bars or join the A-listers at the mega-clubs and check out Ocean Drive. Direct flights with Aer Lingus from €229 each way, as part of a return trip.

2 VENI, VIDI, VENEZIA – THE HOME OF ROMANCE

VENICE: Bring your stoutest shoes, you’ll be doing a lot of walking in this most romantic of cities. Venice is a maze of streets and bridges, and the best way to soak up the atmosphere is to meander along the canals, stopping for a gelato, before heading to Piazza San Marco to trip over thousands of pigeons. The Basilica of St Mark and the Rialto are two top places to visit.

And, of course, you have to take a gondola ride – although they can be pricey (and cheesy).

Flybe – which also operates out of Cork and Knock – fly direct to Venice with prices from €92 next month.

3 SHINE IN THE CITY OF LIGHT

PARIS: Ignore the fact that it’s a cliché: Paris is heaven in Springtime. The French capital positively buzzes with creativity and refinement.

If it’s your first time, you’ll want to see the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Notre-Dame, but you don’t want miss out on the Musée d’Orsay, the Luxembourg Gardens or Le Marais either.

You won’t get to do it all, so plan your itinerary well. Ryanair flies to Paris Beauvais from €55 return next month.

4 SOAR TO CITY OF THE BLUE JAYS

TORONTO: Visit this stunning Canadian city in summer when cafés spill on to pavements and you could rent a canoe to paddle on Lake Ontario.

Alternatively, you can take in a baseball game with the Blue Jays (and pretend you understand the ruor strap on a safety harness to walk around the outside of the 1,167ft CN Tower.

If you’re feeling adventurous, Niagara Falls is a day trip. Flights with WOW, via Reykjavik, Iceland, from €159 next month.

5 GET RIGHT TO THE CORE OF THE BIG APPLE

NEW YORK: It’s the city that never sleeps – and you may not either as there is so much to do.

Shopping is an obvious attraction but the city holds a treat for everyone, from trips to Ellis Island taking in the sights of The Statue of Liberty, to taking a carriage ride through Central Park.

Norwegian Air go from Dublin and Shannon to New York-Stewart and from Cork to Boston.

Fares from Dublin to New YorkStewart start from €138 next month.
