Carlow weather Déise storm

CARLOW 2-12 WATERFORD 2-09

- By Dermot Keyes

CARLOW maintained their 100 per cent record to keep their promotion hopes alive, all despite a late comeback from a Waterford side who struck two late goals to leave the match in the balance deep into stoppage time.

The table toppers led by 1-8 to 0-5 at the break — having weathered Waterford’s early storm — and their greater physicality and all-round quality meant they could afford to withdraw the talismanic Paul Broderick with a quarter of the match still remaining, with Carlow 2-10 to 0-7 ahead; the second goal finished from point blank range by Daniel St Ledger.

But Waterford found some late momentum, with goals from Gavin Crotty (a penalty) in the 69th minute, followed by a fisted effort by captain Paul Whyte in stoppage time leaving the sizeable Carlow support sweating.

But a Brendan Murphy point in the sixth additional minute ensured the visitors went home with both points.
