Limerick up in arms after Stokes nips in to rescue point for Bohemians

-

BOHEMIANS scored a controversial 90th-minute equaliser to end Limerick’s winning start to the season under manager Tommy Barrett.

Both teams lined up to hit each on the counter-attack and with the fair share of chances, they largely cancelled each other out in a nervy first half.

Midway through the opening half, the Markets Field surface – once named the pitch of the year – played havoc with the clearances of Limerick goalkeeper Brendan Clarke.

The veteran netminder managed to get a second chance to clear after a backpass bobbled on the deteriorated surface.

The second half began in similar fashion to the opening half, both sides resilient in defence and looking to capitalise on the break.

It was the visitors who were left to regret a poor pass in midfield, Limerick exploited a stretched Bohs’ defence as Daniel Kearns started off an impressive counter-attack for the hosts.

The former Sligo winger picked out Billy Dennehy who crossed to the back post, Duggan struck across the face of goal for Cian Coleman to slot home from close-range.

As the match headed for stoppage-time, Eoghan Stokes sent shockwaves through Markets Field as he headed home to secure a point for Keith Long’s side.

Limerick argued that the Bohs winger was offside, but referee Ray Matthews waved away protests.
