is no use now. That is why the arrival of a new president of the GAA should mean little.

It should be a ceremonial position, as envisaged by Nickey Brennan. Too often, presidents behave as if they are the executive of the organisati­on, shaping and driving policy.

That they are not must be made clear by John Horan, who now assumes the role.

What the GAA needs is not aspiration­al blather. It needs a new director general to bridge the gap between the elite and the disenfranc­hised, and quickly.
