The form books all says Guillermo del Toro will win this time out with The Shape Of Water. But a female winner would be more timely, particularly as Greta Gerwig – who would be only the second woman to ever win in this category, in the history of the awards – directed Lady Bird, the film that carries Saoirse Ronan’s hopes of finally winning an Oscar.
