Seamus sounds off after Everton crumble

- By David Sneyd

SEAMUS COLEMAN provided a damning indictment of Everton’s performance after Burnley came from behind to beat the Toffees 2-1 at Turf Moor.

The Republic of Ireland captain played the full 90 minutes as he continues his comeback from a horrific double leg break but insisted his teammates crumbled and need to show more desire.

‘Nowhere near good enough for us to crumble like we did. It’s something that we really need to sort out and start winning games very quickly,’ Coleman told Sky Sports.

‘Individually, all of us weren’t good enough. We need to show some desire first and foremost and show that we want it. We do have some quality players that should shine through but you have to work harder than the opposition and we didn’t do that.’

Everton took a first-half lead through Cenk Tosun but Burnley drew level courtesy of Ashley Barnes before Chris Wood struck the winner 10 minutes from time after Everton skipper Ashley Williams was shown a straight red card for elbowing Barnes.

While Everton floundered, Swansea City’s revival under Carlos Carvahal continued with a 4-1 win over a West Ham United side with Declan Rice in the back four.

Ki Sung-yueng and Mike van der Hoorn put the home team 2-0 up at the break and the Hammers’ task was made harder when defender Winston Reid was carried off with a knee injury. Goals from Andy King and Jordan Ayew sealed the rout with a consolation coming from Michail Antonio.

Bottom club West Bromwich Albion’s woes also continued as Troy Denney struck the only goal of the game for Watford on what was his 300th league appearance for the club.

Shane Long, meanwhile, came off the bench with 11 minutes left in Southampton’s home clash with Stoke City but he was unable to help break the deadlock in a 0-0 draw.
