- By Gerard Couzens

POLICE in Tenerife, who are hunting a hit-and-run killer of a 10-year-old Irish boy, have arrested a man.

The child was rushed to hospital critically injured on Thursday evening but died the following day.

The suspect, who lives near the scene, was held after police discovered his car during a sweep of the island.

He was being questioned yesterday afternoon while forensic experts examined his red Alfa Romeo 145.

The car, which had a broken front headlamp, is understood to have been found abandoned a few miles from the scene of the tragedy. The exact spot where it was found has not been revealed.

However, well-placed sources said that an off-duty police officer raised the alarm after spotting the vehicle.

The suspect, who has not been named, lives in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona.

Civil Guard officers leading the hunt for the person who killed the boy released video grabs of the suspect red vehicle as they appealed for the public’s help.

The hit-and-run happened around 8.30pm on Thursday in a street called Calle Dublin – Dublin Street, in English – in Adeje in the south of the island.

The boy, who died at a hospital in the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was coming out of the Gran Sur shopping centre with his family when he was hit. He suffered multiple injuries.

The deceased child has not been named.

It is believed that the driver fled the scene without getting out of his vehicle to see how the injured boy was.
