Taoiseach ‘clueless on homeless crisis’
FG f igures unhappy at Varadkar’s ‘semi-detached’ approach to issues
CONCERNS are growing within Fine Gael over the Taoiseach’s increasingly ‘semi-detached’ stance on a series of issues.
Concerns crystallised after Leo Varadkar’s unimpressive response to the homeless crisis at the Oireachtas Finance Committee this week. He told the committee that the rising number of homeless was ‘extremely disturbing’ and said the Government would investigate why its policies weren’t working.
One senior Fine Gael figure said afterwards: ‘The vagueness was

quite disturbing. Leo seemed to be semi-detached on the issue.
‘Already he appears to be as clueless as Enda was on key issues.’
Another TD said: ‘It was as though the biggest crisis in the country was coming as news to him.’
At the party’s national conference last November, the Taoiseach got in trouble when he said: ‘Ireland has one of the lowest homelessness in the country by international standards compared with our peers.’
Critics responded that he was not comparing like with like as other countries had a broader definition.
