Do you know how much it costs to boil a kettle – or charge your smartphone? Or what we save just by draught-proofing our doors and windows? Our graphic, right, reveals the true cost of powering your home – and provides some useful tips on how you can reduce your bills.

The total bill for running all the electrical appliances runs into hundreds of euro every year.

Some of the figures are surprising­ly low.

For example, it costs a mere €1.18 a year to charge your mobile phone every single day. Others costs, by contrast, are quite high.

Showering for seven minutes every day can cost €53 a year per person every year – a pricey outlay in a large family, which probably helps explain how your money goes literally down the drain!

There are also difference­s in appliances worth considerin­g – an Xbox or PlayStatio­n can cost considerab­ly more to run than a Wii.

And an A+++ rated fridge freezer costs just €24, although an A+ rated appliance will cost you €40 – that’s 66% more.

With some minor tweaks to your daily habits, you can cut your bills without making any major changes to your lifestyle.
