optimism that accompanie­d the high profile appointmen­t of John Evans as Wicklow football manager is likely to have evaporated after a league campaign which saw them finish rooted to the bottom of Division 4.

However, that is only small fry compared to what is happening at grassroots level.

Bray club Fergal Og’s will not field this year because of insufficie­nt numbers, while the Lacken and Kilbride clubs have decided to amalgamate for the same reason.

Another club Coolboy had to concede a walkover last weekend because they were unable to field a team.

In that context, their league position is the least of Wicklow’s worries.
