Court reveals magician’s secrets

- By Hugo Daniel

SUPERSTAR magician David Copperfield had to watch as his stage secrets were revealed in court last week during a case brought by a tourist. Gavin Cox claims he was severely injured when ‘all hell broke loose’ after he was called up on stage during a live show. British tourist Mr Cox, 57, claims that he slipped and suffered injuries including brain damage after being randomly selected to take part in the Copperfield show. A Las Vegas court heard on Friday that during the illusion, Copperfield throws balls into the audience and those who catch them take to the stage. He then makes 13 of them ‘vanish’ from inside a box, only for them to reappear at the back of the theatre.

The magician was in court to hear Mr Cox’s lawyer, Benedict Morelli, say the Briton and his wife Minh attended the show at the Las Vegas MGM in 2013. Mr Morelli said that after a curtain was placed over the box, ‘all hell broke loose’. The illusion, the lawyer alleged, was ‘fraught with danger’. He described how the volunteers had to leave the building before arriving at the back of the theatre. He said Mr Cox was injured when he fell while having to ‘move very quickly’.

Defending, Elaine Fresch said Copperfield’s Disappearing Inc company ‘did not do anything to cause the fall’.
