New Blood: Shane Murphy, Jason Foley, Micheal Burns, Sean O’Shea and David Clifford. And that may not be the half of it; the injured defensive pair of Gavin Crowley and Gavin White could also come into the frame. Goalkeeper Murphy, despite a not wholly convincing campaign which saw him beaten eight times in five starts and struggle with his restarts, still looks a good bet to hold his place for the summer. Foley, who started every game, is a nailed-on certainty in the full-back line, but the two already polished gems are O’Shea and Clifford (left). O’Shea nailed 0-20 (0-7 from play) in his five starts, but more importantly looked comfortable as a creative force in the halfforward line. As for Clifford, he defied the hype to reveal glimpses of his genius in his five starts, racking up 0-18 – 0-13 from play. Who loses out? Brian Kelly will make way in goal, while team captain Fionn Fitzgerald could succumb to Foley’s promotion. Veteran Donnchadh Walsh could lose out in an O’Shea-led halfforward line, while Clifford’s inclusion at full-forward will leave two former players of the year, Kieran Donaghy and James O’Donoghue, battling for a place in the team. What will be their impact? It could weaken the team initially. Introducing two or three players facilitates transition, but any more than that invites a sharp learning curve. Transformative value – In time it is likely to pay-off, but a short-term dividend is highly unlikely – 5/10.
