Rejuvenated Welbeck should be on plane to Russia, says Wenger
ARSENE WENGER believes Danny Welbeck’s late-season flourish and versatility will be enough to secure a place in England’s World Cup squad. Welbeck has scored five goals in six games for Arsenal, having rediscovered his rhythm and sharpness following a long struggle with injuries. The 27-year-old striker, whose strike at CSKA Moscow on Thursday helped clinch a place in the Europa League semifinals, has not started an England game for more than two years but was recalled last month by Gareth Southgate and won his 37th cap against Holland.
‘That reminded him that he is not completely forgotten,’ said Arsenal boss Wenger. ‘At the moment everybody is talking about Harry Kane and rightly so but there is room for Danny.’
Arsenal visit Newcastle in the Premier League today with Wenger planning to make changes to protect players from fatigue after the squad returned from Moscow in the early hours of Friday morning.
