Reputations in balance
DETECTIVE Garda Catherine McGowan is in the sixth year of suspension from Bray Garda Station following allegations that she mishandled a claim of sexual abuse by a woman against a priest. On foot of this, an investigation into procedures in Bray District found evidence of systemic failures at senior and middle management levels – yet Det McGowan is the only officer who faced sanction. Labour TD Alan Kelly has taken up her case. He says the disciplinary procedure was wrong and she should be reinstated. With a garda’s career in the balance, and the force’s reputation further questioned, this matter demands a swift resolution.
