Voucher bought in 1995 is honoured

- By Elaine Keogh

A CO. LOUTH shop has honoured a gift voucher bought 23 years ago and believed to be the oldest voucher ever honoured in Ireland.

The voucher, for £60, was bought in McKenna Man on Earl Street in Dundalk in March 1995, and was redeemed last week, said Conor McKenna, spokesman for the family-run business.

‘We don’t have expiry dates. We were delighted to sell it 23 years ago and we were delighted to honour it,’ he said.

The shop exchanged it for €76. In 1995 it would have been a valuable present to get.

It appears it had been misplaced – for quite a lengthy spell – and then found by its owner in recent days.

‘I believe it is the oldest voucher to be honoured in Ireland,’ said Dundalk chamber of commerce spokesman Paddy Malone.

Mr Malone said that the Dundalk Shop Local gift vouchers do not have an expiry date either ‘and we are very proud of that’.
